**Thiruvananthapuram, April 13, 2025** – Kerala has become the first state in India to achieve complete digital literacy, with over 2.1 million citizens completing a state-sponsored program. The “Digi Kerala” initiative, launched in 2022, provided digital literacy training to individuals of all ages, surpassing the National Digital Literacy Mission’s age limit of 60.
The program, initially piloted in Pullampara panchayat, taught participants basic digital skills, including making calls, using WhatsApp, accessing government services, and utilizing online banking and social media platforms. The initiative involved a massive volunteer effort, utilizing over 257,000 volunteers from various organizations to conduct training sessions across the state in various settings, including homes, workplaces, and community centers.
LSG Minister M.B. Rajesh announced the achievement, pending official confirmation from the President of India. He highlighted the program’s success in exceeding the national guidelines by including citizens of all ages. A rigorous evaluation process, including third-party verification by the Statistics department, ensured the accuracy of the figures. Retraining was provided in areas with low connectivity or significant variations in evaluation results. The program boasts a 98% success rate among participants.
The success of Digi Kerala showcases Kerala’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and empowering its citizens through technology. Examples such as 67-year-old C. Sarasu, now using video calls and YouTube, and 75-year-old Krishnakumar, utilizing WhatsApp for community mobilization, demonstrate the transformative impact of the program.
