Peterborough, ON – Renowned hockey player and broadcaster Gregory Hearst Millen passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 7th, at the age of 67, due to a cardiovascular event. Millen, a beloved figure in the Peterborough community and across the hockey world, leaves behind his wife Ann, their four children, and eight grandchildren.
A 14-year NHL veteran, Millen played for several teams including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, and Detroit Red Wings, known for his distinctive right-handed catching style. Following his playing career, he transitioned to broadcasting, enjoying a celebrated 30-year career as a colour commentator for SportsNet and CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, covering three Olympics and 12 Stanley Cup Finals.
Beyond his professional achievements, Millen was deeply involved in his community. He established summer goalie camps in Peterborough and co-founded the Peterborough Professional Hockey Alumni Association (PPHAA). His commitment to mentorship led him to pursue a Master of Leadership and later teach Leadership Development at Fleming College.
Millen was remembered for his humility, positive spirit, and infectious laugh. A Celebration of Life will be held for family, friends, and colleagues on Thursday, April 17th at 1 pm at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (151 Lansdowne Street West, Peterborough). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, ALS Canada, or the Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice.
