Sun Apr 13 11:10:00 UTC 2025: **Angels Star Mike Trout’s Catch Disputed After Fan Grabs Ball From Glove**

HOUSTON — Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout had a bizarre encounter during Saturday night’s game against the Houston Astros. In the second inning, Trout made a spectacular leaping catch in the right-field stands, but a fan wearing an Astros jersey snatched the ball from his glove.

The play, which occurred on a fly ball hit by Yainer Diaz, resulted in a foul ball ruling by first-base umpire Alan Porter. Despite Trout’s protests, the call stood. Trout explained that once his glove entered the stands, the ball was considered fair game, and replays seemed to indicate the fan touched the ball first. Angels manager Ron Washington considered challenging the call but opted against it to preserve his team’s replay options.

The fan, identified as Jared Whalen, told The Athletic he was trying to protect his son from the incoming ball. Whalen and his son were initially escorted from their seats but later met Trout in the Angels clubhouse. Trout, in a gesture of sportsmanship, gave Whalen’s son a bat and signed the ball, even posing for a picture.

Umpire Porter clarified the ruling, stating that since the ball was already in the stands – outside the field of play – the fielder enters at his own risk. This differs from last year’s World Series incident, where fan interference was called when a ball was pried from Mookie Betts’ glove.

While the unusual play added an unexpected element to the game, it ultimately didn’t affect the Angels’ 4-1 victory. The incident highlights the grey areas of rules surrounding catches made in the stands and the unpredictable nature of fan interaction during live sporting events.
