Sun Apr 13 11:52:06 UTC 2025: ## University of Kashmir Faces Severe Staff Shortage
**Jammu, April 13, 2025** – The University of Kashmir is grappling with a significant staffing crisis, with nearly 20% of its sanctioned posts remaining vacant, according to a response to a Right to Information (RTI) application.
An RTI application filed by Jammu-based activist Raman Kumar Sharma revealed that as of February 2024, 570 out of 2,859 sanctioned posts were unfilled. The majority of vacancies are at the faculty level, including over 200 positions for professors, associate professors, and assistant professors. A further 110 junior assistant positions are also vacant.
Specific departments severely affected include nursing, physical education, internal quality assurance, the Institute of Music and Fine Arts, and administrative sections. Key administrative roles, such as deans and directors, also remain unfilled.
Ghulam Mohammed Wani, the Central Public Information Officer and Assistant Registrar at the university, confirmed the figures in his response to the RTI request. He detailed the number of vacancies across various departments, highlighting the critical shortage of staff across academic and administrative functions.
The substantial number of unfilled positions raises concerns about the university’s ability to function effectively and provide adequate education and services to its students. The university is actively seeking to fill these vacancies.
