Sat Apr 12 17:10:00 UTC 2025: ## WhatsApp Suffers Major Global Outage, Affecting Millions
**New Delhi, April 12, 2025** – WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging platform, experienced a significant global outage on Saturday, leaving millions of users unable to send messages, upload statuses, or make calls. The outage, which began in the evening, quickly trended on X under #WhatsAppDown as users reported widespread issues.
DownDetector, a website that tracks online service outages, registered thousands of complaints. The majority of reported problems (90%) involved message sending difficulties, with a smaller percentage affecting app functionality and voice calls. Users described issues uploading statuses and sending messages, particularly in group chats. While the service briefly recovered, problems recurred later in the evening, resulting in a substantial increase in reported outages.
The outage impacted users worldwide, including a significant portion of WhatsApp’s over 530 million Indian users and its global user base of nearly 3 billion. Some users also reported similar issues with Facebook and Instagram, both owned by Meta.
The timing of the WhatsApp outage coincided with reports of widespread UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transaction failures across India on platforms like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) attributed these failures to intermittent technical issues.
WhatsApp has yet to release an official statement addressing the outage. This marks the second major outage for the platform in less than two months, following a significant disruption in late February.
