Sat Apr 12 15:00:00 UTC 2025: ## WhatsApp and UPI Services Suffer Outages, Disrupting Millions

**MUMBAI, INDIA –** Millions of users in India and across the globe experienced disruptions to their digital communication and payment systems on Saturday. WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, suffered a significant outage affecting message delivery for a substantial number of users. Downdetector, a website that tracks service outages, registered over 460 reports of WhatsApp issues around 5:30 PM, with the majority (81%) citing problems sending messages. Some users also reported difficulties updating statuses, adding stories, and logging into the app. While WhatsApp has yet to release an official statement regarding the outage, this marks the second such incident this year.

The WhatsApp outage coincided with a widespread UPI (Unified Payments Interface) failure in India. This is the third such outage in just 30 days, impacting transactions across major digital payment platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. Downdetector showed over 3,000 reports of UPI issues in India. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) attributed the disruption to “intermittent technical issues.” Service was restored after 5 PM.

The combined outages affected a massive user base; WhatsApp boasts nearly 3 billion users globally, with over 530 million in India alone. The disruptions highlighted the increasing reliance on digital platforms for communication and financial transactions and underscored the potential impact of widespread service outages.
