**Mumbai, India** – Millions of users across India and the globe experienced disruptions to their communication and online payment services on Saturday evening. A widespread WhatsApp outage affected messaging and status updates for a significant number of users, peaking at over 460 reported issues on Downdetector around 5:30 pm. The majority (81%) of complaints centered on failed message delivery, with some users also reporting login and status update problems. While WhatsApp has yet to release an official statement, this marks the second outage this year.
Simultaneously, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) experienced a significant outage, marking the third such incident in just 30 days. Downdetector registered over 3,000 reports of UPI service disruptions, impacting popular apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) attributed the UPI outage to “intermittent technical issues,” causing partial transaction failures. Service was restored after 5 pm.
The combined outages impacted an estimated 530 million WhatsApp users in India and billions worldwide, causing significant inconvenience for both personal communication and online financial transactions. The frequency of these outages has sparked frustration among users and raised concerns about the reliability of these crucial digital services.
