Sat Apr 12 16:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Nationwide UPI Outage Disrupts Digital Payments Across India
**Mumbai, India** – A major technical glitch in India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system caused widespread disruption to digital transactions on Saturday. Popular payment apps like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay were affected, leaving individuals and businesses unable to make payments.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI, acknowledged the issue on X (formerly Twitter), stating that intermittent technical problems were leading to partial transaction failures. They assured users they were working to resolve the problem.
DownDetector reported over 1,100 complaints by midday, with significant numbers impacting Google Pay and Paytm users. Major banks, including HDFC Bank, SBI, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, were also affected.
This is the second significant UPI outage in recent weeks, following a three-hour disruption on March 26th. The reliance on UPI for everyday transactions highlights the severity of these disruptions, causing significant operational setbacks across both personal and commercial sectors.
While the NPCI hasn’t yet identified the cause of the outage, speculation points to potential server overload, planned maintenance, or security threats. The incident comes shortly after the NPCI announced changes to international UPI transactions on April 8th, aimed at improving security for cross-border payments. However, the NPCI clarified that these changes do not impact domestic transaction limits.
The repeated outages underscore the vulnerability of India’s digital payment infrastructure and raise concerns about its resilience. The widespread impact on competing platforms like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts to improve the system’s reliability and prevent future disruptions.
