LONDON – The highly acclaimed Star Wars series *Andor* is preparing for its final season, premiering on Disney+ April 23rd. Showrunner Tony Gilroy reveals in a new *Empire* magazine interview that the show’s creation was a remarkable feat, unlikely to be replicated. Gilroy credits a confluence of factors, including significant resources, unwavering support from Lucasfilm leadership (including Kathy Kennedy and Bob Iger), and the unexpected success of *The Mandalorian*.
“No-one’s ever gonna start a show on this scale again, and shoot it practically, and have the resources and the protection to do something like this,” Gilroy stated. He emphasized the crucial “protection” afforded to the *Andor* team, allowing for creative freedom throughout the production. He specifically credits the success of *The Mandalorian* and its popular character Grogu (“Baby Yoda”) for providing the necessary platform and support to launch *Andor*. “No Baby Yoda, no Andor,” Gilroy confirmed, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between the two shows, despite their tonal differences.
Gilroy also addressed online negativity and attempts to create division between the creative teams behind *Andor* and *The Mandalorian*. He stressed that *Andor*’s success is intrinsically linked to the success of its predecessor. The full interview with Gilroy and Diego Luna (Cassian Andor) is featured in *Empire*’s Jaws At 50 issue, on sale April 10th.
