TIRUCHI, April 12, 2025 – The city of Tiruchi honored the legacy of renowned nadaswaram exponent Sheik Chinna Moulana with a two-day commemorative event concluding on April 13th. The event marked the culmination of the year-long birth centenary celebrations and the 26th annual “Shardhanjali” (homage) concert.
A highlight of the celebrations was the renaming of a street in Srirangam, where Moulana resided, as “Dr. Chinna Moulana Salai.” The ceremony was attended by Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru, District Collector M. Pradeep Kumar, and Mayor M. Anbazhagan.
The celebrations included tribute concerts held across India and the U.S. throughout the past year. Mayor Anbazhagan praised Moulana’s dedication to his art, noting its global reach. Moulana’s family boasts a three-century-long tradition of nadaswaram playing, originating in Karavadi, Andhra Pradesh. His grandson and disciple, S. Kasim, released a CD dedicated to Moulana’s guru, Duraikannu Pillai.
Cash awards were presented to both established and upcoming nadaswaram and thavil artistes. Instrument makers were also recognized, and deserving students received instruments as gifts. The events featured musical performances by leading Carnatic musicians.
