Fri Apr 11 21:47:00 UTC 2025: ## Maharashtra Sarpanch’s Murder Exposes Deepening Caste Tensions
**Beed, Maharashtra –** Four months after the brutal murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the 45-year-old sarpanch of Massajog village, the wounds of caste violence continue to fester in Beed district. Deshmukh, a member of the Maratha community, was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in December 2024, allegedly by a group linked to a powerful politician. Videos of the horrific crime went viral, sparking outrage across Maharashtra.
The prime suspect, Walmik Karad, a close aide to former Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dhananjay Munde, surrendered to police in late December. Munde, a member of the Vanjari community (an OBC group), resigned from his post in March following relentless opposition pressure demanding an impartial inquiry. The incident has ignited long-simmering tensions between the Marathas and Vanjaris, particularly fueled by recent Maratha reservation agitations.
The murder has led to a near-total social boycott in Beed, with members of the two communities refusing to interact commercially or socially. Police officers have even removed their surnames from nameplates to reduce perceived bias and promote unity within the force.
Villagers allege police inaction in the initial stages of the investigation, claiming an FIR was only registered after intervention from prominent activist Manoj Jarange Patil. The Maharashtra Crime Investigation Department (CID) has since filed a 1400-page charge sheet against nine individuals, one of whom remains at large.
The villagers claim the murder stemmed from an extortion attempt by Karad and his accomplices against a windmill company. Deshmukh’s intervention led to the brutal attack. The CID has linked the extortion attempt, assault of a security guard, and Deshmukh’s murder in a single charge sheet.
While the accused are largely from lower socio-economic backgrounds, accusations of a nexus between politicians, police, and extortion gangs persist. Concerns have been raised about Munde’s rapid political ascent and the alleged impunity enjoyed by these gangs. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has pledged government support for the investigation.
Social activist Anjali Damania highlighted the broader issue of criminal accusations against a significant portion of Maharashtra’s MLAs, questioning their ability to effectively govern.
Deshmukh’s family, including his teenage daughter, continues to seek justice, facing a protracted legal battle amidst the deep-seated caste divisions tearing apart their community. The case serves as a stark reminder of the volatile social and political landscape in Maharashtra and the urgent need to address systemic issues of caste-based violence and political corruption.
