Fri Apr 11 19:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Seahawks Re-Sign Drew Lock as Sam Darnold’s Backup

**Seattle, WA** – In a flurry of quarterback signings, the Seattle Seahawks announced Friday the re-signing of Drew Lock as the backup to newly acquired starter Sam Darnold. Lock, a former second-round pick, returns to Seattle after a season with the New York Giants. This reunion marks a third significant quarterback signing of the day, following Joe Flacco’s return to the Browns and Josh Johnson’s undisclosed signing.

Lock, 28, spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons in Seattle as Geno Smith’s backup before signing with the Giants. While his time in New York saw him start five games, including a memorable four-touchdown performance against the Colts, he ultimately failed to secure the starting position. The Giants’ decision to release Daniel Jones opened the door for Lock’s brief starting stint, but ultimately did not result in a long term contract.

Despite a less than stellar career, Lock boasts 28 career starts and has proven himself a valuable backup option. His return to Seattle, under General Manager John Schneider (who originally acquired him in the Russell Wilson trade), is notable given the coaching staff changes and the presence of another young quarterback, Sam Howell, on the roster. Howell, acquired via trade this off-season, started 17 games for the Washington Commanders in 2023.

While some speculate Lock may have been sought after by other teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints, the Seahawks’ familiarity with Lock and his performance appear to have been key factors in his return. His signing adds depth to the Seahawks quarterback room, providing a veteran presence behind Darnold.
