**NEW DELHI** – World Parkinson’s Day serves as a reminder of the progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions globally. Parkinson’s disease, characterized by tremors, stiffness, balance problems, and coordination difficulties, progresses through five distinct stages.
Early symptoms are often subtle, but as the disease advances, motor symptoms worsen, affecting both sides of the body. Later stages bring increased challenges with daily tasks, balance issues, falls, and ultimately, significant mobility limitations. In the final stage, patients may become bedridden and require extensive care, with medications becoming less effective.
Dr. M.V. Padma Srivastava, Chairperson of Neurology at Paras Health Gurugram, outlines the stages:
* **Stage I:** Mild, often unnoticed symptoms affecting one side of the body.
* **Stage II:** Symptoms worsen, affecting both sides of the body; independent living is still possible but daily tasks become challenging.
* **Stage III:** Loss of balance and falls are common; some limitations in daily activities, but independent living is generally maintained.
* **Stage IV:** Significant motor symptoms; difficulty standing without assistance; requires help with daily activities; cannot live alone.
* **Stage V:** Severe stiffness, difficulty walking or standing; often bedridden or wheelchair-bound; requires constant care; medication often ineffective.
Treatment options vary depending on the stage. Early stages may involve medications to manage symptoms. However, in advanced stages, more aggressive treatments are necessary. These include levodopa, dopamine agonists, and MAO-B inhibitors to increase dopamine levels. Deep brain stimulation (DBS), a surgical procedure involving electrode implantation, may be used when medications are ineffective. Advanced treatments like MRI-guided focused ultrasound offer less invasive options for managing tremors in end-stage disease.
While the information provided here is intended to enhance public understanding, readers should consult with medical professionals for accurate diagnoses and treatment plans for Parkinson’s disease.
