Fri Apr 11 00:40:00 UTC 2025: ## US Egg Prices Soar Due to Avian Flu Outbreak
**Washington, D.C.** – Avian flu has caused a dramatic spike in egg prices across the United States. The price of a dozen eggs, which stood at $2.04 (approximately ₹175) in August 2023, reached a peak of $6.23 (approximately ₹536) in March of this year. While recent declines in avian flu cases have led to a slight slowdown in wholesale price increases, egg prices remain significantly elevated.
The surge is attributed to the culling of over 30 million egg-laying hens between January and February 2023 in an effort to control the avian flu outbreak. In total, 168 million chickens have been culled in the US since the outbreak began, a majority of which were egg-laying hens. While many farms are undergoing sanitization and gradually resuming egg production, the impact on supply and prices continues to be felt. Although egg prices typically rise before Easter (April 20th), the avian flu outbreak has exacerbated the price increases considerably.
