Fri Apr 11 11:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Pentagon Removes Greenland Space Base Commander After Vice President’s Controversial Visit
**WASHINGTON** – The US Department of Defense announced the removal of the commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, Susannah Meyers, citing a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead.” The decision follows a controversial visit by Vice President JD Vance to the island last month.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the removal in a statement on X, linking to a Military.com report detailing an email sent by Meyers to base personnel. The email reportedly pushed back against statements made by Vice President Vance during his visit, stating that his concerns regarding US administration policies “are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base.”
Parnell’s statement emphasized that “actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated.” Colonel Shawn Lee has assumed command of the base.
The removal comes amidst escalating rhetoric from the Trump administration regarding increased US control over Greenland. President Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire the territory, while Vice President Vance has publicly argued for a strengthened US military presence, claiming Greenland’s vulnerability necessitates such action. During his visit, Vance openly advocated for Greenland to come under US, rather than Danish, security protection.
While the Vice President’s wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, initially planned to participate in a dogsled race, planned protests reportedly altered her itinerary.
The Pentagon’s action underscores the growing tensions surrounding Greenland’s sovereignty and the Trump administration’s increasingly assertive stance on the matter. President Trump has previously stated he would consider all options to acquire Greenland, including military force, though he expressed optimism a forceful takeover might not be necessary.
