Fri Apr 11 04:54:47 UTC 2025: ## South Korea Establishes Ties with Syria, Dealing Blow to North Korea

**Damascus, Syria/Seoul, South Korea –** South Korea and Syria have formally established diplomatic relations, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for both nations and a setback for North Korea. The announcement came Thursday following a ceremony in Damascus between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.

This move comes amidst significant political transitions in both countries. Syria’s transitional government, led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, took power following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December. Meanwhile, South Korea is currently under an acting president following the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol last week.

The establishment of diplomatic ties concludes months of talks and represents a major foreign policy win for Seoul. South Korea pledged to aid Syria’s recovery from its 13-year civil war through investment and humanitarian assistance. Syria, in turn, expressed hope for South Korean support in easing international sanctions.

The new relationship is particularly significant given North Korea’s historical alliance with the Assad regime. The move effectively isolates North Korea further on the international stage, following Seoul’s establishment of ties with Cuba last year, another former North Korean ally. With the addition of Syria, South Korea now maintains diplomatic relations with all 191 UN member states. The timing, coinciding with both countries’ political upheavals, underscores the shifting geopolitical landscape in the region.
