**Nairobi, Kenya – April 11, 2025** – A nearly two-year-old civil war in Sudan has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with famine now gripping the nation, according to a senior UN official. Shaun Hughes, the World Food Programme’s (WFP) emergency coordinator for Sudan, revealed that nearly 25 million people – half the population – face extreme hunger, with deaths already occurring in famine-stricken areas of western Darfur.
The conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese military and paramilitary forces, has resulted in at least 20,000 deaths, a figure likely far lower than the true toll. Over 8 million people are internally displaced, while 4 million have fled to neighboring countries, further straining already vulnerable regions.
Famine, initially confirmed last August in Zamzam camp, North Darfur, has spread to 10 other areas, with 17 more at risk. The situation in Zamzam, and the besieged capital of North Darfur, El Fasher, is described as “horrific.” The WFP, while providing digital cash transfers to aid 400,000 people, is hampered by limited access and the lack of functioning markets in many areas. They haven’t reached Zamzam with a convoy since October.
Hughes warned that tens of thousands more will die unless the WFP and other aid agencies receive the necessary access and funding. While the Sudanese military recently regained control of Khartoum, the Rapid Support Forces still control much of Darfur. The WFP is currently assisting over 3 million people monthly, a three-fold increase since mid-2024, but requires $650 million to aid 7 million people over the next six months, plus an additional $150 million for those who have fled the country. Hughes confirmed that existing US government funding remains effective. He stressed that without increased funding, the WFP will be forced to either reduce the number of people receiving aid or the amount of aid provided, a process already underway.
