Fri Apr 11 11:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Greenland Base Commander Rejects Vance’s Criticism of Denmark
**Pituffik, Greenland** – The commander of Pituffik Space Base, Col. Susan Meyers, has publicly distanced the base from Vice President JD Vance’s recent criticism of Denmark’s oversight of Greenland. In an email to all base personnel, including Danish and Greenlandic employees, Col. Meyers stated that Vance’s concerns, expressed during a March 28 visit, “are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base.”
Vance, during his visit, criticized Denmark for underinvestment in Greenland and its security, suggesting that Chinese and Russian incursions posed a significant risk. He urged Denmark to improve its stewardship of the territory. This aligns with President Trump’s repeated calls for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, a proposal that enjoys little support amongst Greenlanders themselves (85% oppose joining the U.S., according to a January poll).
Col. Meyers’ email, sent March 31, emphasized her commitment to unity amongst the diverse personnel at the base and declared that all flags will fly proudly together. This constitutes a rare internal rebuke of the Trump administration’s frequent criticisms of NATO allies.
The Vice President’s press secretary, Taylor Van Kirk, maintained that Vance’s visit aimed to strengthen U.S.-Greenland cooperation and implement President Trump’s agenda for enhanced Arctic security.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen also responded to Vance’s comments, stating his appreciation for calls for increased U.S. military presence but criticizing the tone of the criticism, noting that it was “not how you speak to your close allies.”
The Pentagon’s Chief of Staff, Joe Kasper, issued a statement emphasizing the importance of civilian control of the military and stating that actions undermining the chain of command or President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated. This statement comes amid a reported purge of high-ranking military officials under the Trump administration. The Space Force has not yet commented on whether Col. Meyers remains in her position following the email.
