Fri Apr 11 11:32:51 UTC 2025: ## Indian Stock Market Soars Despite Global Downturn; US Suspends Tariffs on India
**Mumbai, April 11, 2025** – India’s stock markets defied a global bearish trend, experiencing a significant surge on Friday following the US’s announcement to suspend additional tariffs on Indian goods for 90 days. The benchmark Sensex jumped 1,310.11 points (1.77%), closing at 75,157.26, while the Nifty surged 429.40 points (1.92%), closing above 22,800.
This positive performance comes in stark contrast to the negative trends seen in other global markets. The US markets experienced a significant downturn on Thursday, with the Nasdaq composite falling 4.31%, the S&P 500 dropping 3.46%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining 2.50%. Asian markets also saw mixed results, with Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi falling, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose. European markets were also trading lower.
The US decision to temporarily suspend tariffs, announced via White House executive orders, is credited with boosting investor confidence. This follows the imposition of universal tariffs on numerous countries by US President Donald Trump earlier this month. China retaliated on Friday by increasing its tariffs on US imports to 125%.
Among the top gainers in the Sensex were Tata Steel, Power Grid, NTPC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Reliance Industries, and Adani Ports. Asian Paints and Tata Consultancy Services were the exceptions, showing weaker performance. Geojit Investments’ Head of Research, Vinod Nair, attributed the positive market response to the unexpected tariff suspension, while noting that TCS’s results fell short of market expectations but projected optimism for the latter half of FY26 due to a robust order book.
Despite the positive market performance, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹4,358.02 crore on Wednesday. The Indian stock markets were closed on Thursday for the holiday Shri Mahavir Jayanti. Brent crude oil prices rose 0.32% to $63.53 a barrel.
