Fri Apr 11 06:55:38 UTC 2025: ## India Secures Extradition of 26/11 Mumbai Attack Co-Conspirator Tahawwur Rana

**New Delhi** – The extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian national convicted in the US for aiding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has been secured by India, marking a significant step towards justice for the victims. Senior Advocate Majeed Memon lauded the move, emphasizing the importance of a fair trial, similar to that afforded to Ajmal Kasab, another key perpetrator. However, Memon criticized the 18-year delay in extradition, calling for accountability from US authorities.

Rana’s extradition was achieved through a two-pronged approach. India’s legal team successfully refuted Rana’s double jeopardy claim, arguing that prosecution under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act doesn’t violate this principle. Simultaneously, India’s diplomatic efforts played a crucial role in securing his handover.

The Patiala House Court in Delhi recently received trial court records from Mumbai related to the 26/11 attacks, naming Rana and David Coleman Headley as accused. Advocate Narender Mann has been appointed as Special Public Prosecutor to handle the case. Rana was convicted in the US for providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the group responsible for the attacks that killed over 174 people. The government has pledged a fair trial, upholding international standards. The successful extradition is being hailed as a major victory in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
