PATNA, INDIA – Senior BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Choubey has suggested that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar be appointed Deputy Prime Minister of India. Choubey, a former Union Minister who served in Kumar’s cabinet, praised Kumar’s contribution to the NDA coalition, calling him an “anchor” and expressing his personal wish to see Kumar elevated to the position, a role previously held by Bihar’s Jagjivan Ram.

Choubey’s remarks come amidst speculation that the BJP may be seeking to sideline Kumar, with some suggesting an “honourable exit” for the Chief Minister ahead of Bihar’s upcoming assembly elections. Past claims have even suggested Kumar sought the Vice Presidency in 2022.

However, Choubey’s proposal was downplayed by both the JD(U) and the opposition RJD. JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar pointed to recent statements by Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirming Nitish Kumar’s leadership within the NDA for the state elections. RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed dismissed Choubey as a sidelined BJP figure, predicting that RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav will ultimately become Bihar’s Chief Minister.
