**Mumbai, April 11, 2025** – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced today the imminent launch of “MUMBAI 1,” a single-use card for all public transport within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The card will be compatible with the Metro, Monorail, suburban trains, and public buses. The system’s architecture is expected to be finalized within a month.
This announcement came during a joint press conference with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who detailed significant railway investments in Maharashtra. Mr. Vaishnaw revealed that ₹173.804 crore in railway projects are currently underway, with an additional ₹23.778 crore sanctioned for new projects this year. This includes the sanctioning of 238 new air-conditioned trains for the Mumbai suburban network, with manufacturing commencing soon. Furthermore, ₹17,000 crore in projects are underway to transform Mumbai’s railway network.
Chief Minister Fadnavis also highlighted the approval of the Gondia-Ballarshah railway line, a ₹4,019 crore project (partially funded by the Union government) that will improve connectivity between Vidarbha and neighboring Chhattisgarh and Telangana. He also announced the launch of the “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Circuit Train Line,” a tourist route showcasing forts from the Maratha Empire era.
