**Kathmandu, Nepal** – Nepali police have arrested Durga Prasai, the alleged mastermind behind violent pro-monarchy protests in Kathmandu on March 28th that resulted in two deaths and over 110 injuries. Prasai was apprehended in Jhapa district, bordering India, along with his bodyguard. Authorities charged him with state offense and organized crime.
Reports indicate Prasai was initially detained in Assam, India, before being transferred to Nepali police. This transfer occurred despite the absence of a current extradition treaty between the two countries. The lack of official disclosure surrounding the Assam arrest has raised questions.
Over 50 other individuals, including prominent members of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) like Dhawal Shumsher Rana and Rabindra Mishra, were previously arrested for their roles in the protests. These individuals, along with Prasai, are facing charges of state offense and organized crime. The RPP is demanding their immediate release.
The March 28th demonstrations, part of a series of pro-monarchy rallies across Nepal, sought the reinstatement of the monarchy and the re-establishment of Nepal as a Hindu state. These protests followed the abolishment of Nepal’s 240-year-old monarchy in 2008, which transitioned the nation into a secular, federal, democratic republic. The arrest of Prasai marks a significant step in the government’s response to the unrest.
