Fri Apr 11 14:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Hurricanes Sign KHL Star Nikishin to Two-Year Deal

**RALEIGH, NC** – The Carolina Hurricanes announced today the signing of highly touted defenseman Alexander Nikishin to a two-year entry-level contract. The 23-year-old, acquired after a mutual contract termination with his KHL team SKA St. Petersburg, will earn a base salary of $832,500 annually, plus a $92,500 annual signing bonus. The deal also includes a performance bonus tied to winning the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Nikishin, a third-round pick of the Hurricanes in 2020, has established himself as one of the KHL’s top defensemen over the past three seasons. His impressive resume includes 157 points (45 goals, 112 assists) in 193 games, a KHL assist title (44 assists in 2022-23), and a +71 plus/minus rating over his KHL career. Even in a comparatively less productive season in 2024, he still managed 46 points (17 goals, 29 assists) and a +19 rating in 61 games. He also boasts experience with the Russian Olympic team.

While his immediate impact on the Hurricanes’ playoff run remains uncertain, Nikishin is widely expected to fill a significant role next season, potentially replacing Dmitry Orlov, who becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer. This signing provides the Hurricanes with significant cap savings and a strong defensive prospect.

“If it were possible, I’d be ready to play tomorrow,” Nikishin said, expressing his excitement about joining the team. “If it works out, I’d be thrilled and would give it everything I’ve got.”

General Manager Eric Tulsky, who anticipated Nikishin’s arrival since last August, described Nikishin as the organization’s top prospect last offseason. The team expects Nikishin to bolster their blue line for years to come.
