Fri Apr 11 12:59:07 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru Couple Assaulted in Apparent Case of Moral Policing; Five Arrested

**Bengaluru, India –** Five men, including a juvenile, have been arrested following the assault of a couple outside a park in Bengaluru, police confirmed Friday. The incident, which sparked outrage and condemnation from state officials, was captured on video and appears to be a case of moral policing.

The footage shows the couple, a man in an orange t-shirt and a woman wearing a burqa, engaged in a heated confrontation with a group of five men. The men questioned the woman about her family’s knowledge of her whereabouts and challenged the man about his association with a woman of a different faith, using abusive language and threats. While police initially denied any violence, a second video emerged showing the men surrounding and assaulting the man, allegedly striking him with a wooden log.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Girish stated that a case has been registered based on a complaint filed by the woman. He confirmed the arrests but added that the investigation is ongoing. The police are reportedly focusing on the men’s questioning of the couple’s presence together.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge strongly condemned the incident, declaring that the state government will not tolerate moral policing. He emphasized Karnataka’s progressive nature, contrasting it with other states where such incidents are more prevalent. The incident has reignited debates about religious freedom and social attitudes in the region.
