Fri Apr 11 12:25:54 UTC 2025: ## Farmers Demand Action Against Industrial Pollution in River Bhavani

**Gobichettipalayam, Tamil Nadu –** Farmers in Gobichettipalayam taluk have voiced serious concerns over industrial pollution in the River Bhavani, urging the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and prevent further contamination. The Bhavani, the state’s second-largest river after the Cauvery, provides crucial water resources for agriculture, residents, and wildlife.

Subi Thalapathi, president of the Thadapalli–Arakkankottai–Bhavani Nadhi Pasana Vivasayigal Sangam, highlighted the discharge of effluents from numerous industries into the river, posing a significant threat to water quality. He warned that if the pollution continues, the water will become undrinkable.

Thalapathi specifically cited a textile processing plant approved for construction near the Kodiveri Dam, less than one kilometer away, despite regulations mandating a five-kilometer buffer zone. This issue, he stated, has been brought to the attention of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the relevant minister, with a request for the plant’s operating license to be revoked.

Following intervention from MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan, who also raised the matter in the State Assembly, the government has temporarily suspended the plant’s license and formed a committee to investigate. The farmers remain vigilant, demanding strong action to protect the vital water resource.
