**Brussels, April 10, 2025** – The European Union has announced a 90-day suspension of planned retaliatory tariffs against the United States, mirroring a similar move by President Donald Trump. The EU’s executive commission, citing a desire to allow for negotiations, will hold off on imposing €20.9 billion ($23 billion) in tariffs on US goods.
This decision follows President Trump’s Wednesday announcement pausing his own sweeping tariffs on global trading partners, including a 20% levy on EU goods. While the pause offers a window for resolving trade disputes, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the EU’s countermeasures will be implemented if negotiations prove unsatisfactory.
The EU’s planned tariffs were a response to Mr. Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, deemed “unjustified and damaging” by the EU, the US’s largest trading partner. The targeted goods represent a small fraction of the €1.6 trillion ($1.8 trillion) in annual US-EU trade.
While preferring a negotiated solution, the EU is also exploring further countermeasures, potentially targeting US tech companies and the services sector, should the 90-day pause fail to yield a positive outcome. Ms. von der Leyen emphasized the EU’s commitment to diversifying trade partnerships and strengthening its internal market. The EU is continuing to engage with countries representing 87% of global trade to promote free and open commerce.
