**Los Angeles, CA** – The draw for the 2025 Gold Cup has pitted Mexico against former national team coach Miguel “Piojo” Herrera, now at the helm of Costa Rica. Mexico, the reigning champions, will face Herrera’s Costa Rica, Surinam, and the Dominican Republic in Group A.
The tournament, which will take place in the summer of 2025, serves as a crucial warm-up for Mexico before the 2026 World Cup, which they are co-hosting with the United States and Canada. Mexico’s first match will be at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Other notable matchups include Canada in Group B against Honduras, El Salvador, and Curaçao; and Guatemala (led by Mexican coach Luis Fernando Tena) in Group C alongside Panama, Jamaica, and Guadeloupe. The United States, meanwhile, will face Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and invited guest Arabia Saudi in Group D.
Mexico aims to win the Gold Cup to solidify their dominance in CONCACAF and bolster Javier Aguirre’s team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The final will be held in Houston, Texas. The return of Herrera, who led Mexico at the 2014 World Cup, adds significant intrigue to the tournament.
