Fri Apr 11 11:28:17 UTC 2025: ## China Slams US Tariffs, Files WTO Complaint, and Retaliates with 125% Levy

**Beijing, China** – China has escalated its trade war with the United States, announcing a retaliatory 125% tariff on all US goods, effective immediately. This follows President Trump’s recent imposition of increased tariffs on Chinese goods, bringing the total US tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce described the US tariffs as a violation of international trade rules and the primary cause of current global economic instability. A ministry spokesperson stated that the US “should bear full responsibility” for the “serious shocks and severe turbulence” in the world economy and urged Washington to remove the tariffs.

Simultaneously, China filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), challenging the legality of the US tariffs. Beijing characterized the escalating tariff war as a futile “numbers game” with no practical economic significance. However, they warned of resolute countermeasures if the US continues its aggressive tariff policy.

While expressing strong condemnation of US actions, Chinese officials left the door open for dialogue. Al Jazeera’s Katrina Yu reported that despite the strong rhetoric, Beijing continues to express willingness to negotiate, but only under conditions that exclude threats and coercion.

Experts warn that the escalating trade war could rapidly fuel inflation, with US consumers potentially driving up demand and prices in anticipation of higher tariffs. Georgetown University professor Karl Widerquist highlighted the potential for immediate price increases as consumers rush to purchase goods before the tariffs fully impact the market. The situation remains tense, with the outcome of the WTO complaint and the possibility of future negotiations remaining uncertain.
