Fri Apr 11 07:56:58 UTC 2025: ## Thousands of Teachers Protest Job Losses in West Bengal

**Kolkata, April 11, 2025** – Thousands of teachers in West Bengal staged a protest march today demanding the release of their Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets following a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated their appointments. The teachers, who lost their jobs last week after the court declared the appointments of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff as “vitiated and tainted,” marched from Karunamoyee in Salt Lake to the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) Bhawan.

The protesters, joined by civil society organizations, claim that releasing the OMR sheets would allow for the identification of genuinely eligible candidates. They expressed outrage that a police officer previously accused of assaulting teachers during a prior protest has been assigned to investigate the cases filed against them. One protester stated, “In no civilized society does an accused investigate the victims.”

A large police contingent, including the Rapid Action Force, was deployed to prevent the march from reaching the SSC Bhawan. The protest highlights the ongoing tension and calls for justice following the Supreme Court’s decision.
