DHAKA, BANGLADESH—April 10, 2025—A Bangladeshi court issued an arrest warrant today for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her daughter Saima Wajed Putul, and 17 others on charges of corruption. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) alleges they fraudulently obtained a residential plot in the Purbachal area of Dhaka.
The charge sheet, accepted by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib, accuses Ms. Putul of using her mother’s influence to secure the plot, violating land allocation regulations. The ACC notes that Ms. Putul and her family already owned property in Dhaka. Ms. Putul currently serves as the South East Asian regional director for the World Health Organization.
This is the latest in a series of legal actions against Ms. Hasina. She faces separate arrest warrants from the International Crimes Tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity and enforced disappearances. The ACC also recently launched a separate investigation into alleged misuse of funds during the “Mujib Centenary” celebrations, involving Ms. Hasina, her sister, and a former government official.
ACC Chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen stated that the process for bringing back corrupt individuals is the same regardless of their status. The court has requested further investigation reports from the ACC by May 4th. The accused are currently at large.
