**Patna, Bihar, April 11, 2025** – At least 25 people died in Bihar on Thursday, April 10th, due to lightning strikes and hailstorms that swept across several districts, officials reported. Nalanda district suffered the most significant loss of life, with 18 fatalities. Other affected areas include Siwan (2 deaths), and single deaths reported in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed the death toll was over 50, a figure not yet confirmed by official sources. He urged the state government to provide compensation to farmers for crop losses. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the families of each victim. This follows 13 deaths from lightning strikes in four districts on Wednesday, April 9th.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, with gusty winds, across numerous districts in Bihar, including Patna, through Saturday. Heavy rainfall and subsequent waterlogging were reported in Patna on Thursday. While the Patna Municipal Corporation claimed swift drainage of rainwater, the impact of the severe weather remains significant.
