**New Delhi, India –** Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin accused of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, arrived in India on Thursday after being extradited from the United States. The extradition, which the US described as a “critical step toward seeking justice,” concludes a long legal process following his arrest in 2009.
Rana, 64, faces 10 criminal charges in India, including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government, murder, and forgery under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He is alleged to have played a key role in planning the attacks, which killed 166 people, including six American citizens, and were carried out by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist group. Indian authorities have long sought his extradition.
The US Department of State publicly celebrated the extradition, highlighting its long-standing support for India’s efforts to bring those responsible for the 2008 attacks to justice. Spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized the horrific nature of the attacks and the importance of holding those involved accountable. The extradition was also confirmed by President Trump during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US in February.
Upon arrival in Delhi, Rana was immediately arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and remanded to their custody for 18 days. The NIA stated that the extradition was the result of years of sustained effort.
Rana is accused of conspiring with David Coleman Headley, another key conspirator in the Mumbai attacks who is currently serving a 35-year sentence in the US. The extradition marks a significant development in India’s pursuit of justice for the victims of the 26/11 attacks.
