Thu Apr 10 19:11:11 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Conservancy Workers Face Harsh Working Conditions Amidst Rising Temperatures
**Chennai, April 11, 2025** – Conservancy workers in Chennai are facing extremely challenging working conditions, with inadequate facilities and soaring temperatures exacerbating their plight. According to reports in *The Hindu*, many workers, employed by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), lack access to basic amenities like clean drinking water and restroom facilities.
Sita (name changed), a conservancy worker for eight years, describes her daily struggle to eat lunch in the dust and heat near Beach Road. She highlights the lack of access to water provided only to officials, relying on the kindness of residents for hydration. Similar accounts emerged from workers in other zones, who reported irregular water supply in poorly maintained toilets and restrictions on using residents’ facilities.
The Chennai Corporation All Department Employees’ Association (CCADEA) acknowledges the increased public support but stresses the lack of government-provided improvements. While some zones have seen initiatives like fruit and snack distribution, these remain sporadic. Workers employed by private companies face stricter limitations on seeking assistance from residents. Even access to water for battery-operated vehicle drivers is limited, forcing them to purchase bottled water frequently due to the heat.
GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran announced plans to address these issues. He stated that proposals for separate sanitary facilities, including changing rooms, cloakrooms, and toilets for men and women, will be ready by the end of May for all division offices. This would represent a significant improvement from the current situation where such facilities are limited to Executive Engineers. The implementation of these proposals will be crucial to improving the working conditions of Chennai’s conservancy workers.
