**New Delhi, India** – Tahawwur Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, was arrested by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) upon his arrival in Delhi today. Rana, accused of playing a key role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, faces charges of criminal conspiracy, waging war against India, murder, forgery, and violations of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Rana’s extradition follows a two-month wait after US President Donald Trump approved the request during Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde celebrated the news on X, praising the Prime Minister’s efforts.
The NIA presented Rana before a special court this evening, citing strong evidence, including emails, to support their request for police custody. They argued that custodial interrogation is crucial to fully unravel the conspiracy behind the attacks.
Rana, who resided in Chicago, is alleged to have provided logistical and financial support to David Coleman Headley, the prime accused in the 2008 attacks. The chargesheet details Rana’s assistance, including helping establish an immigration law firm in Mumbai that Headley used to travel throughout India under the guise of business.
In 2009, the FBI arrested Rana in Chicago for aiding a planned attack on a Danish newspaper and providing support to the Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group responsible for the Mumbai attacks. He was convicted two years later. Despite appeals citing various health issues, his extradition was ultimately approved.
The 2008 Mumbai attacks, which lasted three days, resulted in 166 deaths and targeted several locations, including hotels, a train station, and the Chabad House. Only one of the ten terrorists involved, Ajmal Kasab, was captured alive.
Pakistan has distanced itself from Rana, stating he hadn’t renewed his Pakistani documents for over two decades and holds Canadian citizenship. Rana is expected to be transferred to Tihar Jail in Delhi before eventually being moved to Mumbai to face trial.
