**New Delhi, India** – Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being held in a heavily fortified cell at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters in Delhi following his extradition from the United States. The 64-year-old Pakistani-origin Canadian national arrived in India on Thursday and was immediately taken into custody.
Rana’s cell, described as a 14×14 foot space within the NIA building, is equipped with multiple layers of security, including round-the-clock guards and comprehensive CCTV surveillance. Access is strictly limited to 12 designated NIA officers. Security around the NIA building has been significantly heightened since his arrival, with additional Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel deployed.
After a brief appearance before a special NIA court at Patiala House, where the courtroom was cleared of non-essential personnel, Rana was granted 18 days of NIA custody. He appeared without legal counsel but was subsequently appointed an advocate through the Delhi Legal Services Authority.
The NIA plans to conduct intensive interrogations of Rana, which will be recorded under dual camera surveillance. Sources indicate that at least eight central investigative and intelligence agencies have requested access to question him. His confinement is designed to ensure maximum security and controlled access, reflecting the high-profile nature of the ongoing investigation.
