Fri Apr 11 08:20:00 UTC 2025: ## EU Delays Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods for 90 Days Amidst Trade Talks
**Brussels, April 10** – The European Union has announced a 90-day delay in imposing retaliatory tariffs on US goods, following a similar move by the US President to temporarily suspend his own tariffs. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the postponement on Thursday, stating that the EU remains prepared to negotiate but will not rule out other options.
The decision follows President Trump’s Wednesday announcement of a 90-day suspension of most of the US’s “reciprocal tariffs” on EU goods. Von der Leyen welcomed this move, calling it “an important step towards global economic stability” and emphasizing the need for a predictable trade environment.
The EU had previously planned to impose tariffs on $23 billion worth of US products, in response to US tariffs on European steel and aluminum. These retaliatory tariffs were scheduled to come into effect in phases starting April 15th. The EU, America’s largest trading partner, has consistently criticized the US tariffs as “unjustified and disruptive”.
High-level trade officials from the EU have been engaged in intensive talks with the US in recent weeks to find a resolution. A spokesperson for von der Leyen stated that the Commission will use the 90-day period to assess progress, consult with member states and industry, and determine the next steps.
While pursuing negotiations, the EU has also expressed its intention to diversify trade partnerships, continuing to work with countries committed to free and open trade. The EU remains committed to establishing a frictionless and mutually beneficial trade relationship with the US, but will explore alternative options if negotiations fail to yield satisfactory results.
