DHAKA, BANGLADESH – Pro-Palestinian demonstrations across Bangladesh have escalated into violent attacks on international businesses, leaving a trail of damaged property and raising concerns about political stability. Over the past two weeks, as the Israeli offensive in Gaza intensified, protests initially peaceful, morphed into widespread vandalism targeting stores perceived to have links to Israel.
Major cities including Dhaka, Bogra, Sylhet, Cox’s Bazar, and Chittagong witnessed significant unrest. Outlets of international brands Bata, Pizza Hut, and KFC were specifically targeted. In Bogra, protesters smashed the glass walls of a Bata showroom. In Sylhet, a KFC store was attacked, with demonstrators damaging products and soft drinks. Pizza Hut and KFC locations in Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong suffered similar fates, with stones hurled at signage and windows broken. Social media is awash with videos and images documenting the widespread destruction.
Bata International has issued a statement vehemently denying any political affiliations and condemning the vandalism as a result of false narratives. The company emphasized its privately-held, family-owned status, with origins in the Czech Republic.
In response to the escalating violence, Bangladesh’s Inspector General of Police, Baharul Alam, has ordered a nationwide investigation to identify and arrest those responsible. Authorities are analyzing video footage to track down perpetrators and have warned that violence disguised as protest will not be tolerated.
Security has also been heightened near the US Embassy in Dhaka following anti-American protests and slogans targeting US President Donald Trump.
The unrest has deepened the political divide between the caretaker government and the opposition. Interim leader Dr. Muhammad Yunus condemned the violence, while the Awami League, led by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accused the government of failing to curb extremism. The incident highlights the volatile political climate in Bangladesh and the potential for widespread unrest fueled by international events.
