**Coimbatore, April 10, 2025** – The temporary suspension of a 27% US tariff on Indian goods has been met with cautious optimism by Indian exporters across various sectors, including garments, auto components, and engineering. While welcoming the reprieve, industry leaders urge both the government and businesses to proactively improve India’s global trade competitiveness.
Following a meeting with export promotion council heads on Wednesday, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal assured the implementation of measures to monitor the tariff’s impact and imports, including the creation of a 24/7 helpline.
Council representatives, speaking on condition of anonymity, highlighted the potential shift in global trade dynamics. The continued tariff suspension, coupled with the 125% duty on Chinese goods, could significantly diminish China’s competitive edge. This could alter the “China plus one” strategy employed by international buyers, creating a more level playing field for India, Vietnam, and South Korea.
Looking ahead, the representatives emphasized the need for India to actively pursue bilateral trade agreements with the US, negotiating not only tariffs but also a broader range of issues within the next 90 days. They also stressed the importance of strengthening domestic regulations regarding the origin of imports to counter the growing production capacity and lower costs of Chinese goods.
One export promotion council head warned against complacency, stating, “There is a new world order taking shape. India cannot sit back and expect orders and investments to come its way. The government should create an environment to attract investments and increase the share of exports in the GDP.” The overall sentiment is one of relief tempered by a recognition of the need for strategic planning and proactive measures to secure India’s position in the global marketplace.
