KOLKATA, INDIA (April 10, 2025) – Teachers and non-teaching staff in West Bengal have launched a relay hunger strike protesting their dismissal following a Supreme Court ruling. The Supreme Court upheld a 2024 Calcutta High Court judgment that annulled the 2016 recruitment of 25,753 employees by the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC), citing a tainted selection process.

The protesting teachers, who began a sit-in outside the SSC office on Wednesday, allege police brutality during a demonstration outside a district inspector’s office on Wednesday. They claim they were baton-charged, kicked, and shoved by law enforcement. One protester stated that the hunger strike, with a rotating roster of participants, is the first step in a broader plan of action.

The dismissed employees argue that the SSC failed to distinguish between those who obtained jobs fraudulently and those who did not. Their protest continues outside the SSC office in Kolkata.
