**New Delhi, April 10, 2025** – Tahawwur Rana, a key co-conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, arrived in India today after being extradited from the United States. The 64-year-old Pakistan-born Canadian national was handed over to a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team in California on Tuesday. His last-ditch attempt to avoid extradition was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Rana, a close associate of David Headley, is accused of aiding the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in the attacks that killed 166 people, including six Americans. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the US in 2013 and will now face trial in India. Authorities believe Rana played a crucial role in providing logistical support and reconnaissance for the terrorists. He is also a suspect in plots targeting the National Defence College and Chabad House in Mumbai.
Upon arrival in Delhi, Rana was taken to NIA headquarters for questioning. He is expected to appear before an NIA judge at Patiala House Court. The Union Home Ministry appointed advocate Narender Mann as special public prosecutor for the case. Rana is likely to be held in Tihar Jail’s high-security ward.
While India has sought the extradition of Headley, who pleaded guilty in the US, the request was denied as he had already been convicted and sentenced to 35 years imprisonment. Former Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai stated that Rana’s role, while significant, was primarily in providing legal cover and logistical assistance to Headley.
The extradition marks a significant step in India’s pursuit of justice for the victims of the 26/11 attacks. Increased security measures are in place around Patiala House Court in anticipation of Rana’s court appearance.
