**COIMBATORE, April 10, 2025** – The Singanallur tank in Coimbatore is poised to see a significant improvement in water quality thanks to a new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) nearing completion. The ₹4.50 crore plant, with a capacity to treat two million litres of water per day, is expected to address long-standing issues of sewage contamination and water hyacinth infestation plaguing the 250-acre water body.
For years, the tank, fed by the Noyyal River, has struggled with these problems, hindering efforts to revive boating activities. Previous attempts to clean the tank proved unsuccessful, leading the Coimbatore Corporation to invest in the STP as a permanent solution. With over 90% of the construction complete, the project is anticipated to be fully operational within the next two to three months, following a trial run. A plan to tackle the persistent water hyacinth problem will also be implemented concurrently.
This project marks a significant step towards improving the ecological health of the Singanallur tank. Coimbatore Corporation officials have indicated plans to install similar STPs at other tanks in the city – including Ukkadam, Valankulam, Selvampathy, Krishnampathy, Kumarasamy tank, Selvachinthamani, and Kurichi – in a phased manner.
