**New Delhi, April 10, 2025** – The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, today launched a strong challenge against Section 44(3) of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP), arguing it undermines the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Over 120 MPs from the bloc, including Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, signed a memorandum demanding the section’s repeal, which will be submitted to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
At a press conference, leaders from various parties including Congress, DMK, Shiv Sena (UBT), CPI(M), SP, and RJD voiced their concerns. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi highlighted that Section 44(3) replaces a crucial clause in the RTI Act, Section 8(1)(j), which previously allowed for the withholding of personal information unless its disclosure served a greater public interest. The new section removes this public interest exception, allowing government bodies to withhold personal information without any such consideration.
Civil rights activists have also criticized Section 44(3), echoing the opposition’s concerns about its impact on transparency and accountability. The INDIA bloc’s move signals a significant challenge to the recently enacted DPDP Act, raising questions about its potential implications for citizens’ rights.
