Thu Apr 10 07:10:00 UTC 2025: **Trump Suspends Retaliatory Tariffs on 75 Countries, Including Vietnam, for 90 Days**

WASHINGTON D.C. – President Donald Trump announced on April 9th via his Truth Social account a 90-day suspension of retaliatory tariffs on imports from over 75 countries. During this period, a 10% tariff will be applied to goods from these nations, a significant reduction from previous rates. This action targets countries that have engaged in tariff negotiations with the U.S. but haven’t responded in kind to previous U.S. tariff increases.

Vietnam, which engaged in high-level discussions with the U.S. – including a phone call between General Secretary Tô Lâm and President Trump on April 4th – will see its tariffs reduced to 10% for 90 days. This follows a U.S. announcement on April 2nd imposing a 46% tariff on Vietnamese goods. However, this reduction does not apply to Vietnamese aluminum and steel (subject to a 25% tariff since March 12, 2025), or automobiles and auto parts (also remaining at 25%). Vietnam had previously requested a 1-3 month tariff delay for negotiation purposes.

The 10% tariff rate surpasses even the most optimistic projections by the Ho Chi Minh City government, which had anticipated a 15% rate as the best-case scenario. Chairman Nguyễn Văn Được convened a meeting on April 9th to assess the impact of the U.S. tariff policy on the city’s economic growth.

While offering tariff relief to most nations, the U.S. simultaneously increased tariffs on Chinese goods. Citing China’s response to previous U.S. tariffs, Trump raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%, up from a previous 104%.
