Thu Apr 10 12:30:07 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Farmers See Significant Milk Yield Increase Thanks to New Cattle Supplement

**Chennai, April 10, 2025** – A new cattle supplement, TANUVAS Grand, is boosting milk production and farmer incomes across Tamil Nadu. Developed by researchers at TANUVAS (Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University), the supplement has been distributed free of cost to over 19,000 farmers through the Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation Project (TNIAMP).

Farmers report significant increases in milk yield since using TANUVAS Grand. V. Vadivelu, a dairy farmer from Alagapuri, saw a 500 ml increase per cow per day after switching to the supplement. Similar success stories are emerging from Kancheepuram and Thanjavur districts.

The supplement, patented in 2022, improves digestion and reduces methane emissions by 25-30 litres per cow daily. It achieves this by promoting the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the cow’s rumen. According to researchers, the supplement, costing only ₹100 per 600 ml bottle, needs only 10 ml per feed and doesn’t require changes to existing fodder. Average milk yield increases have been reported at 711 ml per cow per day, with some farmers seeing increases as high as 2 litres.

The TNIAMP, a World Bank-aided project with a ₹3,249.12 crore outlay, has impacted over 15 lakh farmers across 34 districts, increasing incomes by 25% to 200% through various initiatives including the distribution of TANUVAS Grand. The project has also focused on sustainable aquaculture and inland fisheries. While the widespread distribution of TANUVAS Grand has been largely successful, some farmers, particularly those in remote areas, advocate for increased accessibility through local shops.
