Thu Apr 10 08:10:53 UTC 2025: ## Revived Lake in Karnataka Boosts Local Economy and Tourism
**Bidar, Karnataka, April 10, 2025** – The restoration of the desiccated Janawada lake in Bidar district, Karnataka, has yielded remarkable results, revitalizing the local ecosystem and significantly improving the livelihoods of local fishermen. The ₹5 lakh project, completed between November 2022 and April 2023 under the Mission Amrit Sarovar program (MGNREGA), has transformed the 57-acre lake.
Two fishermen’s societies, with a combined 65 members, now cultivate four fish species – goldfish, catla, mrigal, and rohu – harvesting around 10 quintals annually. Over 4 lakh fingerlings have been nurtured, with quarterly harvests sold to markets in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune.
The project’s success is not limited to economic benefits. The rejuvenated lake’s tranquil beauty has attracted local tourists and visitors from neighboring villages, transforming it into a popular picnic spot, according to Girish Badole, CEO of Bidar Zilla Panchayat.
Janawada lake is one of 91 lakes in Bidar district revived under the Amrit Sarovar Programme. While celebrating the success, officials emphasize the need for ongoing monitoring to prevent pollution and maintain the lake’s ecological health. The Sagar Society, which leases the lake for fish farming, is committed to sustainable practices.
