Thu Apr 10 08:45:12 UTC 2025: ## India Aims for Swift US Trade Deal Following Tariff Pause

**New Delhi, April 10, 2025** – India is seeking to rapidly conclude a trade agreement with the United States, following US President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily suspend reciprocal tariffs on several countries while increasing levies on China. An unnamed Indian government official stated that the 90-day pause on tariffs provides significant relief for Indian exporters, particularly those in the shrimp industry.

India and the US agreed in February to finalize the first phase of a trade deal by autumn 2025, aiming for $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. The official highlighted India’s proactive approach, noting it was among the first nations to initiate talks and establish a concrete deadline. However, the official acknowledged that global trade dynamics remain heavily influenced by US-China trade tensions.

President Trump’s actions saw a temporary reduction in tariffs on various trading partners, including India, following a day of significant market volatility caused by earlier tariff increases. Despite this, tariffs on Chinese imports were raised to 125%. The reciprocal tariff on Indian goods remains at 10%. The Indian Trade Ministry has yet to respond to requests for comment.
