**Hyderabad, India (April 10, 2025)** – Hyderabad Traffic Police have begun canceling the registrations of vehicles driven by minors, escalating their crackdown on underage driving. The move follows a sharp increase in accidents involving minors behind the wheel; fatalities more than doubled from three in 2023 to seven in 2024, with seven accidents already reported in 2025 resulting in three deaths and six injuries.
Authorities have initiated proceedings to cancel the registration of 20 vehicles, marking the first batch of cases under the new enforcement drive launched earlier this week. Since Monday, over 300 cases have been filed, with an average of 100-120 violations reported daily. The police are requesting the Telangana Transport Department to suspend the registrations for 12 months.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), D. Joel Davis, explained that after court proceedings (which are swift for these non-trial cases), requests are immediately sent to the RTA for registration cancellation. This action is backed by Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which holds vehicle owners responsible when minors drive their cars. Penalties include fines, jail time, registration cancellation, and a driving license ban until the age of 25.
The police aim to send a strong message to parents and guardians about the severe consequences of allowing minors to drive, emphasizing that it’s not only illegal but carries long-term repercussions.
