**Chennai, April 10, 2025** – The recent 50 rupee increase in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices, effective April 8th, has led to widespread confusion and anger among Chennai residents. Gas delivery personnel report significant increases in customer disputes, particularly with those who made online payments before the price hike.
Delivery workers describe lengthy arguments with customers refusing to pay the extra amount. In some cases, agency owners had to intervene to resolve the conflict. One worker even forwent a tip to ensure the full payment was made to avoid jeopardizing a long-standing customer relationship.
Consumers, like R. Priya of Thoraipakkam, expressed surprise at having to pay the additional fee in cash upon delivery, despite receiving online confirmation of their order. V.S. Jayaraman, a resident of T. Nagar, highlighted the unfairness of customers having to pay increased prices for cylinders ordered before the price change was implemented. He suggested that distributors should honor the old rates for such pre-hike bookings.
Consumer activist T. Sadagopan criticized oil marketing companies (OMCs) for their lack of a mechanism to protect consumers from price fluctuations. He argued that the additional burden is particularly unfair to non-subsidized consumers already grappling with high fuel and essential commodity costs.
While distributors claim they are merely following regulations by issuing new bills to reflect the price increase, they acknowledge the need for a better system from OMCs to manage price changes smoothly and protect both customers and the industry from the resulting disruption. The situation underscores the need for clearer communication and a more consumer-friendly approach to managing LPG price adjustments.
