Thu Apr 10 12:58:24 UTC 2025: ## Kerala to Get First Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage System

**Thiruvananthapuram, April 10, 2025** – Kerala is set to become the first state in India to have a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) before the summer of 2026. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to establish a 125 MW/500 MWh BESS at Mylatty in Kasaragod.

The project, awarded to JSW Neo Energy Ltd. at a storage rate of ₹4.61 per unit, will allow for the storage of excess daytime solar energy for use during peak demand hours. The system is designed to provide four hours of stored power. The KSEB has offered an ₹8.40 crore incentive for completing the project within nine months.

The project received central government viability gap funding of ₹135 crore in November 2024. A recent study by the Power department’s Energy Management Centre – Kerala recommended BESS projects as the most suitable solution for the state’s energy storage needs until 2027. The state is also planning additional BESS projects in other locations. The MoU was signed by SECI executive director Atulya Kumar Naik and KSEB deputy chief engineer Rajan M.P. in the presence of Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty.
